1. Italian Alphabet and Pronunciation

Italian alphabet is consist of 5 vowels and 16 consonants.


* The letters J (I lunga), K (cappa), W (doppia V), X (ics) and Y (ipsilon) are used for loanwords only.

◎ Pronounce C and G

There are several sounds was not mentioned in the video:

◎ Gn-
- The sound of gn is similar to ni [|nj]in onion [|ʌnjən].
ex) bagno [ba'njo]

◎ Gli-
- The sound of gli is similar to the lli[lj] inmillion[|mɪljən].

- In addition, at the begging of the word, gli is pronounced as three separate letters.


◎ S
- S has two ways of pronunciations: voiced and unvoiced.
If it comes to before a voiced constant it is voiced /z/,
and it is unvoiced /s/ if it comes to before an unvoiced constant and vowels.




◎ Z
- Z also has two pronunciations: voiced /dz/ and unvoiced /ts/.

◎ H
- H doesn't have sounds like Spanish.
